Charli Cannon confirmed to race at MXGP of Australia
The level of competition at the starting gates of the MXGP of Australia has gone up a notch, with four-time Australian MXW champion Charli Cannon confirmed to race at the international event on September 19-21.
The addition of Cannon as a wildcard to the Darwin-based round of the Women’s Motocross World Championship, which makes its first ever appearance on Australian shores, ensures that more eyes will be watching the WMX class as Australia’s fastest female motocross racer gets set to take on the world’s best on home soil.
Over the course of the year, Cannon has continued to grow as both a competitor and an athlete, overcoming injury setbacks and the challenges of a completed season in America, where she finished an impressive runner-up in the highly competitive AMA Women’s Motocross Championship.

“It’s been a year of lessons, racing injured, winning and losing races, and learning from it all,” said Cannon. “I’m grateful for the people around me.
“Without them, I wouldn’t be racing in Darwin or in America.”
While Cannon has previously raced at select WMX GPs, Darwin represents her chance to chase a milestone that she is yet to achieve: a World Championship podium.
“I’ve never been on the podium or won a WMX World Championship race, but that’s the goal,” she explained. “I’m still not 100% after surgery, but I’ve been training harder than ever at MTF with Colleen Millsaps in America.
“It’s a process, the improvements don’t come overnight, but I already feel stronger and more prepared than ever.”

With the world watching and history being made in Darwin, the 20-year old Queenslander will be chasing more than just results. She will be racing for a place among the world’s best, which will be a huge feat for the continued rise of women in motocross and their impact on motorsport more generally.
“Charli, along with her fellow competitors from around the world, has played a tremendous role in raising the profile of women in motorsport,” Peter Singleton, Vice President of Honda Australia explained. “Everyone at Honda is incredibly proud of her achievements, and we are fully behind her as she chases glory on home soil.”
