Crunch time for 2025 Penrite ProMX in Canberra as the championship stakes rise

Round six of the Penrite ProMX Championship, presented by AMX Superstores (ProMX), heads to Canberra this weekend in what will be a pivotal stop for the series, with the results destined to set the tone for the season’s remaining races.

Just a 20-minute drive from the nation’s capital, the ACT Motorcycle Club will make its return to the fixture on Sunday for the first time since 2021, with its hard-packed, clay surface a welcome change from the prior rounds’ loamy conditions.

Leading the way will be the Kawasaki MX1 and the Pirelli MX2 Championships, with MAXXIS MX3 and the KTM Group MX65 Futures completing the schedule in what will be a fantastic round of racing.

Kawasaki MX1
The premier Kawasaki MX1 Class has seen both Monster Energy CDR Yamaha’s Jed Beaton (Vic) and Boost Mobile Honda’s Kyle Webster (Vic) go back and forth this season, with time running out for defending champion Webster to close the gap at the front of the field. He sits 15pts behind Beaton entering Canberra, and is in a must-win situation at this point of the championship.

Third-placed KTM Racing Team rider Nathan Crawford (QLD) showed improvements at the fifth round in Warwick, posting a 2-3 moto scorecard for third overall, and was all around closer to the front duo. Completing the top five is the resurgent Honda Racing rider Wilson Todd (Vic), and privateer revelation Zachary Watson (QLD), who will do what they can to challenge at the pointy end.

Penrite Racing Empire Kawasaki’s Luke Clout (NSW) notched a 1-1 performance the last time out in Canberra in 2021, and will look to find that front-running form once more after a difficult couple of rounds, while veterans Kirk Gibbs (SA) and Todd Waters (QLD) battle it out in positions seven and eight.

The stage is set for an impactful round of racing for this year’s Kawasaki MX1 Class, with the series entering the business end in deciding who will emerge as this year’s champion!

Pirelli MX2
Defending champion Brodie Connolly (Vic) has started to inch away from the rest of the Pirelli MX2 field, winning the last three of four motos, and showcasing why he wears the number one plate. Monster Energy Yamalube Yamaha’s Ryder Kingsford trails by 17pts, and will need to strike back to remain in contention for the title.

Claiming four of the five podiums in 2025, KTM Racing Team’s Noah Ferguson (QLD) remains strong in P3, however, previous round winner Alex Larwood (SA) has closed to within 3pts of the final position on the podium, and this promises to be a fight until the end. The second Factory KTM of Byron Dennis (NSW) is a further 10pts behind Lawrood, with third overall in the standings still wide open.

Knocking on the door of the top five are Jayce Cosford (NSW), Cobie Bourke (NSW), Rhys Budd (NSW), and Deacon Paice (WA), with each rider looking for a standout performance of the 2025 season after a consistent front half.

There is plenty to watch for in Pirelli MX2, with battles all over the racetrack set to keep fans around the nation on the edge of their seat and lining the fences.

MAXXIS MX3
It’s been a convincing display of racing so far for Honda Racing’s Kayd Kingsford (NSW) in 2025, who holds a 38pt margin over second-placed Ky Woods (NSW), with Honda’s Jet Alsop (QLD) a further 8pts behind Woods in P3. It’s a sizeable gap for anyone to make up at the head of the pack, with winning races the priority for the competitors.

Over the course of the series, Seth Shackleton (WA) and Jack Deveson (NSW) have been engaged in an intense battle for positions four and five, with 6pts separating the duo entering this weekend in Canberra.

Only 6pts is the difference between sixth-place Sonny Pellicano (WA) and 10th-place Cooper Rowe (NSW), with the fight for a placement inside the top 10 alive and well as we enter the fifth round for the MAXXIS MX3 riders.

KTM Group MX65 Futures
Round one of the KTM Group MX65 Futures Class was swept by Mason Ezergailis (Vic), with fellow Victorian Lucas Poole in P2 and Kyle Sproule (NSW) rounding out the Class podium in Traralgon.

The young field of riders are ready and prepared for their second round, which will mark the penultimate stop in their series before the final round taking place at Queensland Moto Park. It’ll be critical for these racers to collect solid points at this round, to set themselves up nicely for the title.
