Penrite ProMX Championship battle set for explosive Appin return this weekend
There will be no shortage of explosive action at Sunday’s second round of the 2025 Penrite ProMX Championship, presented by AMX Superstores, as national motocross returns to New South Wales’ Appin venue following a one-year absence from the fixture.
The hard-packed, technical Appin circuit, which is notoriously rutty, will provide a stark contrast to what the country’s best racers experienced in the deep, dark loam of Wonthaggi three weeks ago.
What awaits competitors is a 1.65km, 20-turn race track, located just 75km southwest from the Sydney CBD and a 15-minute drive from Campbelltown, which makes it a favourite for the strong motocross community in the region.
Headlining the action will be the Kawasaki MX1 and Pirelli MX2 Championships, while the MAXXIS MX3 Championship and Fox Racing MX85 Cup will ensure close, entertaining action will come thick and fast throughout the day.

Kawasaki MX1
The opening round of the Kawasaki MX1 Class in Wonthaggi delivered fantastic entertainment across the entirety of the two-day schedule, with both defending champion Kyle Webster (Vic) and Monster Energy CDR Yamaha’s Jed Beaton picking up exactly where they left off just one season ago. The two were dominant forces throughout the event, although a fall in the second moto for Boost Mobile Honda Racing’s Webster left him with a sizeable 22-point deficit on his title-rival Beaton leaving round one.
KTM Racing Team’s Nathan Crawford (QLD) and Penrite Racing Empire Kawasaki’s Luke Clout (NSW) made the most of the Webster mishap, taking a well-earned P2 and P3 on the day. Wonthaggi was undoubtedly a dominant performance for the leading duo; however, for both Crawford and Clout, they’ll want to dispel that narrative quickly, and what better place to do so than Appin? Add in the fact that Clout is a NSW local with plenty of laps around the circuit, he’ll be looking to capitalise on some insider knowledge.
A hungry, motivated list of contenders are waiting in the wings to make their mark on the series, with the second Monster Energy CDR Yamaha of Maximus Purvis (NZ) high on this list. Additionally, Queensland’s Wilson Todd (Repco Honda Racing), South Australia’s Kirk Gibbs (KTM Racing Team) and Western Australia’s Regan Duffy (Raceline Husqvarna TDub Racing Team) are all in the mix, with front-running calibre potential present to make a charge in Appin.
Finally, the privateer heroes of the opener can’t be overlooked. Levi Rogers (QLD) and Zachary Watson (QLD) were ultra impressive in Wonthaggi, posting P6 and P7 results respectively in a highly competitive Kawasaki MX1 Class.

Pirelli MX2
In the Pirelli MX2 Class, defending champion Brodie Connolly (Vic) was the standard of the field at round one, notching a 1-1 scorecard en route to a dominant day in the sand. At this stage, it’s looking good for the Polyflor Honda Racing rider, and though early in the season, the number 1 is looking fast.
Both Monster Energy Yamalube Yamaha’s Ryder Kingsford (NSW) and NFAL Honda Racing’s Alex Larwood (SA) kept Connolly honest throughout the weekend, minimising the damage by claiming a solid haul of points. For Kingsford, he also is a local of the Appin region, and so he’ll be looking to utilise his knowledge in order to take down Connolly.
KTM Racing Team duo Byron Dennis (NSW) and Noah Ferguson (QLD) collected P4 and P5 finishes in Wonthaggi and will look to improve on those results at round two this Sunday.
As always in the Pirelli MX2 category, there is a range of hungry young riders who want nothing more than to make a name for themselves in Penrite ProMX competition, so be on the lookout for an underdog to get in the mix at any moment.

MAXXIS MX3
The MAXXIS MX3 Class belonged to Monster Energy WBR Yamaha Race Team’s Ky Woods (NSW) in Wonthaggi, with a dominant 1-1 performance across the weekend signalling that he will be a force to be reckoned with this season.
Woods was shadowed home closely by the Honda duo of Kayd Kingsford (NSW) and Jet Alsop (QLD), who also announced themselves as championship contenders this season with overall podium finishes at the season-opener.
Positions four and five belonged to KTM riders Jackson Fuller (QLD) and Seth Shackleton (WA), with each rider perfectly capable of challenging the front-runners at any moment throughout the course of the season.
Always an entertaining and unpredictable class, MAXXIS MX3 will continue to deliver great racing as these young riders fight for this year’s championship.

Fox Racing MX85 Cup
The Fox Racing MX85 Cup was all defending class champion Seth Thomas (NSW) in Wonthaggi. Picking up where he left off last year, a sublime 1-1 performance was a message to the rest of the field that he is here to claim another class title this year.
Blake Bohannon (QLD) and Deegan Fort (WA) were the second and third-placed riders, putting up a valiant fight to Thomas in the sand, and will be looking to bring the heat in Appin this Sunday to try and overthrow the defending champion.
As per usual, there are a bunch of young, fast, talented kids in the MX85 Class who’ll be looking to get into the fight at round two, with unpredictability the name of the game.

Gates will open at 8:00am on Sunday, April 13. Purchase your tickets here to see Australia’s best motocross riders battle it.
