ProMX ’23: Ferris, Budd, and Williams feature in Maitland Penrite ProMX thriller on Sunday

Racing has concluded at the fourth round of the 2023 Penrite ProMX Championship, presented by AMX Superstores, with Yamaha’s Dean Ferris sweeping all three Thor MX1 motos, while Serco Yamaha’s Rhys Budd earned his first-ever Pirelli MX2 class overall. Cambell Williams won the MAXXIS MX3 overall, and Lachlan Allen was victorious in the MX85 WJMX Qualifier.

In a day where all four seasons were on display, riders were faced with a difficult Maitland circuit as the weather wreaked havoc on the hard-packed surface, providing a level of instability that the athletes would need to navigate throughout the day.

Thor MX1

Both Boost Mobile Honda Racing riders of Kyle Webster and Jed Beaton came out of the gates firing, with Webster taking home the AMX Superstores Top 10 Pole Shootout with a blistering 1:43.301 lap-time, as Beaton sat just 0.075 in arrears. The CDR Yamaha Monster Energy duo of Aaron Tanti and Luke Clout finished in positions three and four, respectively, while KTM Racing Team’s Kirk Gibbs rounded out the top five.

After a dominant performance the day prior, Ferris wasted no time in setting the tone for Sunday’s racing, grabbing the holeshot in the opening Thor MX1 moto and leading wire-to-wire for his second race victory in Maitland. He was not without pressure, however, as Clout and Tanti continued their attack in unison, with 2021 champion Clout leading home defending champion Tanti in positions two and three. Webster and Beaton rounded out the top five.

It was business as usual for Ferris in the third Thor MX1 moto across the Maitland race weekend, with the YZ450F-mounted rider once again withstanding pressure from both Clout and Tanti, who finished the moto in P2 and P3 respectively. It was Beaton and 2020 title winner Todd Waters (Raceline Husqvarna Berry Sweet Racing) next in line to complete the weekend.

The podium order for the weekend, as replicated in all three motos, was Ferris from Clout and Tanti. Ferris now takes possession of the championship leader’s red plate on 145 points, with Beaton slipping to second with 136, and current number one plate-holder Tanti climbing to third at 119 points, tied with Gibbs.

Pirelli MX2

The opening Pirelli MX2 moto of the weekend was won by KTM Racing Team’s Nathan Crawford, who put a healthy 13.562 second margin on defending champion Wilson Todd in second. Following a hot qualifying day for the Serco Yamaha squad on Saturday, Rhys Budd continued his form with a third-place ride, with Ryan Alexanderson (KTM) and Haruki Yokoyama (Empire Kawasaki) completing the top-five.

The skies had opened by the time the second Pirelli MX2 moto rolled around, with riders facing difficult conditions as the gates dropped. As goggles were tossed and carnage ensued, it was Dobson who emerged victorious, followed by teammate Rhys Budd in P2, and Terrafirma Honda Racing’s defending champion Todd in P3. Noah Ferguson (GASGAS Racing Team) and Crawford were fourth and fifth.

After a 3-2 moto scorecard, Serco Yamaha’s Budd earned his first-career Pirelli MX2 overall win using consistency, followed by Todd in second, and KTM’s Crawford in third. With that, Todd extends his points lead to 27 over teammate Brodie Connolly (Polyflor Honda Racing), with Crawford a further four points back in third.

Maxxis MX3

After the unique three-moto format in Maitland, it was Cambell Williams (Empire Kawasaki) who took top honours in the MAXXIS MX3 class, followed by championship leader Byron Dennis (GASGAS) in second, and Yamaha’s Jake Cannon, who finished in third with a consistent scorecard across the three races.

With the opening moto yesterday taken out by Jet Alsop (KTM), today saw Jack Mather (Raceline Husqvarna Berry Sweet Racing) back on top in moto two ahead of Williams and Dennis. The third outing was won by Williams, which was enough for his first overall of the year, followed by Dennis and Mather on-track.

After round four of the season, Dennis now sits four points clear of Mather, with Williams entering the fray in third, 29 points from the lead. It’s shaping up to be a hard-fought second half of the season for some of the country’s top young motocross talent here in the Penrite ProMX Championship.

MX85 WJMX Qualifier

The MX85 WJMX Qualifier belonged to KTM-mounted Lachlan Allen in Maitland, who secured a clean sweep across the three-moto format to take the top step of the podium this weekend.

GASGAS rider Jack Nunn led home series winner Seth Thomas in second and third positions, respectively, while it was Thomas who scored the highest points ahead of Nunn and Allen, following his impressive round in Maitland.

Round five of the 2023 Penrite ProMX Championship, presented by AMX Superstores, will take place at Gilman in South Australia on the 28th of May, where it will once again be all to play for across the hotly-contested Thor MX1, Pirelli MX2 and MAXXIS MX3 championship categories.
