ProMX ’23: Ferris, Alsop, and Allen star in Saturday’s Penrite ProMX motos in Maitland
Saturday’s action at round four of the 2023 Penrite ProMX Championship, presented by AMX Superstores, has concluded in Maitland, NSW, with three-time MX1 champion Dean Ferris taking the opening Thor MX1 moto victory, as KTM’s Jet Alsop raced to the MAXXIS MX3 moto win.
Riders were greeted with blue skies and warm temperatures as the gates dropped in the Lower Hunter Valley region, where day one’s racing consisted of the opening Thor MX1, MAXXIS MX3, and MX85 WJMX Qualifier motos, while Pirelli MX2 took to the circuit for qualifying ahead of Sunday’s action.
Thor MX1
It was a day of blue in the Thor MX1 Class, with defending champion and CDR Yamaha Monster Energy ace Aaron Tanti topping the qualifying timesheets in the morning. Behind Tanti was Boost Mobile Honda Racing’s Kyle Webster, with the second CDR Yamaha Monster Energy of Luke Clout finishing the session in position three. Kirk Gibbs (KTM Racing Team) and Jed Beaton rounded out the top-five, with all five riders separated by less than a second.
The gates dropped for the opening Thor MX1 moto, with top-qualifier Tanti rocketing off the line and taking the early lead. CDR Yamaha Monster Energy teammate Clout and Yamaha-mounted Ferris squabbled for position behind the leader, before Tanti fell out front, and Ferris made the move on Clout to inherit the lead. From there, the number 111 would cruise to a 12.960 second margin over Clout, with Tanti capitalising on a late race mistake from Kyle Webster to grab the final podium position.
Championship leader and Boost Mobile Honda Racing rider Beaton crossed the line in eighth, which reduces his Thor MX1 Championship margin to just five over Ferris, with fellow former champion Gibbs a further nine in arrears.
Pirelli MX2
Qualifying for the Pirelli MX2 Class was topped by Serco Yamaha’s Jesse Dobson, with teammate Rhys Budd a marginal 0.045s off Dobson’s time, as defending champion Wilson Todd secured the third fastest time, just 0.226s off the leader. Fourth place was KTM Racing Team’s Nathan Crawford, as Yamalube Yamaha Racing’s Jayce Cosford was fifth.
Maxxis MX3
The MAXXIS MX3 class was also on-track at Maitland for their opening moto of the weekend, with Queensland youngster Jet Alsop crossing the line in first position in MAXXIS MX3 moto one, while Yamaha Junior Racing duo of Jake Cannon and Seth Burchell followed.
Series leader Byron Dennis (GASGAS) came home in fifth position, and now sits seven points clear of Jack Mather (Raceline Husqvarna Berry Sweet Racing) – ninth position on Saturday – in the standings.
MX85 WJMX Qualifier
The MX85 WJMX Qualifier saw KTM-equipped Lachlan Allen take the race victory, with GASGAS Junior Racing Team’s Seth Thomas finishing in P2, and KTM Junior Racing Team talent Cooper Ford landing the final step on the podium in third.
With Saturday’s action concluded, riders will take to the circuit tomorrow for the second and final leg of round four of the 2023 Penrite ProMX Championship, presented by AMX Superstores, in Maitland, where two motos across each class will take place as the quest for the 2023 championships continue.
